What's gender got to do with it?

Today I did something I often swear I won't do and that's gave both Mumbrella and Laurel Papworth's Blog a read. Really all I was left with was annoyance. For those of you who aren't obsessed with the microcosm that is Sydney focussed social media you're probably unaware of the blogtastic face off that's occurred in recent days between the two sites. Needless to say they don't like each other much and they have public blogs... wackiness ensues! \o/

For me Social Media is about the social and not the media. I don't work in PR, I don't work for a digital agency. I have the occasional appearance in traditional media but I don't use Twitter for a living and I don't attend networking events for anything but personal interest as a Nerd Girl. This is why really I am not an avid follower of either blog or ‘personality’ attached to each site. Generally I don't accept requests for network additions from people I don't know, and while I know a fair number of self styled Social Media Experts this is more to do with their ability to down pints and make comic references than their job title.

So why today did I read their blogs, why today do I feel it necessary to comment here?

Firstly because a lot of people have been posting links on Twitter about the whole Laurel v Tim ... noise for several days and I like to get my information from the source.

But mostly the reason that I was curious was because of a comment made to me at Girl Geek Dinners Sydney last week. A friend of mine was looking increasingly uncomfortable about a discussion of a mutual female acquaintance. I asked why my friend appeared so uncomfortable and was told this was because she was now paranoid about being labelled a bully after Laurel’s comments online and the wave of very public response that has followed.

Why we love Felicia Day

As if Buffy and Dr Horrible star Felicia Day didn't already have our love she really hit one out of the park for nerd girls every where this week.

If you're not already aware the Streamy Awards are the accolades for online and streaming television, an important and emerging format in the new digital media economy. Dedicated to the VodCasts and original television content to the internet they bring credit where it's due to both crowd sourced and professionally produced digital TV.

The 2010 Streamy Awards were announced this week and Felicia Day won the Best Female Actress in a Comedy Web  Series for her role in The Guild - A TV show about a fantasy MMORPG guild based on Day's own online gaming experience.

She had the following to say in her speech:

"This is for geek girls everywhere. I hope I continue to make content in the future and act in roles in the future that inspire people to go on and create themselves."

Felicia has been an outstanding spokeswoman for the Nerd Girl community and brings fairness, equality and a positive image to web diva, Twitterati gamer chicks everywhere and shows that not every nerd girl out there is awkward, overweight or socially crippled. We hope she continues with her online work and wish her well for the recently announced Season 4 of The Guild.

For all the winners of the Streamys go to http://www.streamys.org/winners/2010-winners/ be sure to watch some of the great content that's been nominated or won. Our heart always goes out to the guys at Revision3 who continue to make some of the best online content available. The Totally Rad Show is possibly the best review show for nerds I've found to date, sadly they lost out at this year's Streamys to DiggNation our other Rev3 favourite.
